Understand Your Vision
“If you do not speak English, you should study it as a missionary. This will bless you during your mission and throughout your life. Learning English will enable you to help build the Lord’s kingdom in additional ways and will be a blessing for you and your family.” –Preach My Gospel, Chapter 7 | Learn English

How can English help you accomplish your goals after your mission?
“For my job, I write emails every day to my manager…I write at an expert level. I learned that from EnglishConnect for Missionaries.” – Elder Sellar, Brazil São Paulo & India Bengaluru Missions

  • EnglishConnect can enhance your employment and educational opportunities, specifically through BYU-Pathway Worldwide.
  • Prayerfully consider Heavenly Father's vision for your life. Consider how English can help you accomplish this vision. Write down your thoughts. You can use President M. Russell Ballard’s talk "Return and Receive" as a guide to develop your own goals.
  • Watch the video below to see how EnglishConnect can bless your life now and in the future.

You will be most successful as you rely on the Holy Spirit and seek the Gift of Tongues.

“Part of seeking the gift of tongues is to labor and struggle and to do all you can to learn the language. Be patient as you prayerfully study and practice the language. Trust that the Spirit will help you as you live the way you should and do your very best. Have faith that you can have the gift of tongues in its true and most comprehensive sense.” - Preach My Gospel, Chapter 7 | The Gift of Tongues
Choose Your Level
“A kind Heavenly Father will help us in our quest. First, learn what we should learn. Second, do what we should do. And third, be what we should be.” - President Thomas S. Monson, "To Learn, to Do, to Be"

EnglishConnect offers multiple levels to help you learn English. Think about your current English skills and confidence in the language, then read the descriptions below to determine your starting level.

Read about the EnglishConnect levels and decide which is right for you.
  • EnglishConnect for Beginner: I only know very few or no English words.
  • EnglishConnect 1: I am familiar with the English alphabet and can only say basic words or memorized phrases.
  • EnglishConnect 2: I can form basic sentences but sometimes struggle to hold a simple conversation.
  • EnglishConnect 3: I can have natural conversations and can read and write basic sentences.

If you need a little help choosing your level, you can use the placement tool to get a recommendation. Ultimately, you decide which level is best for you.

Inform your mission language coordinator or mission leaders which level you selected.
Access Your Materials
EnglishConnect 1, 2, and 3 have a workbook. If you need a workbook, contact your language coordinator or mission leaders. If you are an EnglishConnect beginner, use the guide linked below. STUDY EFFECTIVELY
Prepare Spiritually
In order to achieve your goals, you must also prepare yourself spiritually.

Consider the following suggestions from Preach My Gospel, Chapter 7, as you plan your study:
  • Pray sincerely for divine assistance.
  • Seek the gifts of the Spirit, including the gift of tongues and the gift of interpretation of tongues.
  • Study, practice, and use the mission language each day.
Create a Language Study Plan
Creating a language study plan will help you focus your language study time each day.

Use the tasks outlined in your EnglishConnect materials and the steps given in Preach My Gospel, Chapter 7 | Create a Language Study Plan.

Periodically, take time to “evaluate and revise your study plan. Review your study plan each week to evaluate if it is working. Invite your companion and mission leaders to suggest areas for improvement.” Preach My Gospel, Chapter 7

TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
Report to the Lord
The Lord has given you this opportunity to learn English while serving your mission.

Give an account to the Lord each day on your progress and ask Him for help in the areas you might be struggling in.

“While we are not all equal in experience, aptitude, and strength, … we will all be accountable for the use of the gifts and opportunities given to us.” - President James E. Faust, I Believe I Can, I Knew I Could
Report to Your Mission President
President Monson taught: “When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported, the rate of improvement accelerates” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1970, 107).

Share your progress with your mission president and seek his counsel to address any challenges you're experiencing. Invite him to help you understand how to seek the gift of tongues.
Take Your Assessments
Unit and Level Tests
When finished with each unit and level complete the accompanying optional assessments on the Missionary Resources page.

Elicited Imitation Test (EI)
Take the EI every three transfers (four months) in the Missionary Portal to track your language proficiency progress.

Take your final EI test in your last transfer. Be sure to download your certificate at the end of the test and save it. You can use it to show employers or institutions of education your English proficiency. If you score a 6.5 or higher, you are pre-approved for admission to BYU-Pathway Worldwide.

    AFTER YOUR MISSION
    Continue Learning
“Strive to master the language throughout your mission and after you return. The Lord has invested much in you, and He may have uses for your language abilities later in your life. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland explained: ‘We would … hope that every missionary learning a new … language would master it in every way possible. … And as you do so, your [teaching] and testifying skills will improve... Stretch yourself in the language, and you will gain greater access to the hearts of the people.’” – Preach My Gospel, Chapter 7

If you do not finish EnglishConnect during your mission, join a conversation group near you.
    Enroll in BYU-Pathway Worldwide
After taking the final EI, if you score a 6.5 or higher, you are pre-approved for admission to BYU-Pathway Worldwide.
Use your English Skills to get a Better Job
Research shows English proficiency can expand your employment opportunities and increase your pay rate. As you are looking for employment after your mission, include your English language level (from the EI) as a skill on your resume or application.
