Language Coordination Responsibilities

EnglishConnect for Missionaries helps missionaries develop English skills to increase post-mission service, employment, and academic opportunities — specifically BYU-Pathway Worldwide.

The mission president may choose to assign someone to help oversee the program, manage materials, and encourage missionaries in achieving their goals. On this website, the individual with this assignment will be referred to as a language coordinator.

The language coordinator’s responsibility is to help missionaries succeed in learning English by supporting the mission president in establishing a culture of language learning. This includes helping missionaries accomplish their language learning goals as mentioned on the Missionary Steps for Success page.

The language coordinator should focus their time on these key responsibilities:

Understand the Vision
Learning English can have a significant impact on the trajectory of a missionary's life when they return home. English proficiency can open doors for education, especially through BYU-Pathway Worldwide, and will enable returning missionaries to enter employment with higher earning potential.

You play an important role in helping missionaries achieve the benefits of learning English through EnglishConnect.

Assess Needs
  • Consider how to specifically help missionaries in your mission work through the Steps for Success.
  • Confirm missionaries have selected a level and note their level for your records.
    • EnglishConnect for Beginners: For missionaries that know very few or no English words
    • EnglishConnect 1: For missionaries that are familiar with the English alphabet and can only say basic words or memorized phrases
    • EnglishConnect 2: For missionaries that can form basic sentences, but struggle to hold simple conversations
    • EnglishConnect 3: For missionaries that can have simple conversations and can read and write basic sentences
Manage and Distribute Materials
  • EnglishConnect for Missionaries materials are available in 14 languages.

  • Missionary Training Centers will provide new missionaries with their own materials before entering the mission field.
    • Ensure every missionary has materials including audio tracks
    • As needed, order back-up and replacement materials from the Church store or the Global Service Center.

  • NOTE: Missions launching the program for the first time will be required to provide EnglishConnect books for all infield missionaries. Missions can choose to provide a full set for each missionary, or determine missionary levels and provide only the books needed for a missionary's current and future levels.
    • The EnglishConnect for Missionaries set includes:
      • EnglishConnect 1 Workbook
      • EnglishConnect 2 Workbook
      • EnglishConnect 3 Workbook
      • Grammar Book

If available, order the version in the missionary's native language.

Missions should use their normal printing and distribution channels.
Monitor Progress
  • Follow-up with missionaries to provide any support as they move through the program. You may choose to use a simple tracking tool.

  • Ensure missionaries complete the following assessments in the Missionary Portal. Only the assessments they are currently eligible are available when they visit the Missionary Portal:
    • Elicited Imitation Test (EI)
      • Missionaries should take the EI approximately every four months. The Final EI should be taken during the last transfer of their mission. If they score a 6.5 or higher on the EI they will be eligible for admission to BYU-Pathway Worldwide.
      • Each missionary should take their final EI test in their last transfer.

  • Missionaries may also complete optional unit and level assessments online. These optional assessments are for their benefit only, their scores will not be reported or recorded.
Encourage Missionaries
You can support the mission leader's vision for establishing a culture of language learning and helping missionaries accomplish their goals by:
  • Ensuring missionaries are using the resources effectively.
  • Visiting the missionary resources page to learn more about additional resources available to help missionaries learn English.
  • Working with companionships or individual missionaries to help them establish effective study patterns and feel confident in their ability to accomplish their goals.

YOU WILL BE MOST SUCCESSFUL AS YOU HELP MISSIONARIES LEARN TO RELY ON THE HOLY SPIRIT AND SEEK THE GIFT OF TONGUES.
Participation Certificate

EnglishConnect Certificate of Participation for Missionaries

When a missionary completes an EnglishConnect level, be sure to celebrate their progress! Click below to download and award them with an EnglishConnect participation certificate. (See “When should missionaries advance levels in EnglishConnect?” for more information.)

The EnglishConnect participation certificate should not replace the Elicited Imitation certificate. The Elicited Imitation or EI certificate certifies language proficiency level.
